Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships Presented to Two Students at Williams-Mystic
(Mystic, Conn.; Sept. 23, 2003) – Crowley Maritime Corporation, in conjunction with Williams-Mystic, The Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport, has awarded the first Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships to two deserving students in the program.
Kelsey Torpey of Wescosville, Pa., and Eric Biermann of Philadelphia, Pa., were selected based on academic success, financial need, and their interest in maritime trades and maritime studies. In addition to participating in the Williams-Mystic Program, Torpey attends Westchester University and Biermann attends Northeastern University.
The scholarship program was established this year by Thomas B. Crowley Jr., Chairman, President and CEO, in memory of his late father, Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Over the years, Crowley has presented tens of thousands of dollars to deserving students at the maritime academies and other select institutions in the name of his father, who guided the company to extraordinary heights before passing away in 1994.
Williams-Mystic is the only interdisciplinary program of its kind. Undergraduates of all majors share one semester at Mystic Seaport to focus on the past, present and future of the earths oceans. Williams-Mystic combines the academic excellence of Williams College and the unparalleled learning environment of Mystic Seaport The Museum of America and the Sea. Students participate in four rigorous courses, a museum skills class, a Pacific Coast field seminar, a Nantucket Island field seminar, and a deep-water offshore voyage.
