Crowley Transporting Transit Buses to Puerto Rico for Metro Bus Authority
10 buses expected to help ease bus shortage
(Jacksonville, Fla.; Feb. 13, 2008) – Crowley Maritime Corporation’s liner services group is transporting 10 much-needed transit buses to Puerto Rico this week. The buses, slated for the Puerto Rico Metropolitan Bus Authority, are expected to help increase passenger carrying capacity and ease the current bus shortage on the island.
The buses left Jacksonville today and are scheduled to arrive in San Juan on Tuesday.
“We have a long-standing and positive relationship with Crowley,” said Ivan Alt, manager of Air and Ocean Exports at Bennett International Transport. “So when it was time to book the buses, Crowley was the clear choice. Their service is reliable and we know we can count on them to provide excellent customer service. It is obvious, from their track record, that they are committed to business in Puerto Rico.”
The news of the newly acquired transit buses is positive for Puerto Rico residents who use public transportation. A soft economy on the island and higher vehicle operating costs have contributed to a greater number of people using public transportation, which in turn has put a strain on bus capacity. Next month, Crowley is scheduled to transport 10 additional buses which will further alleviate the island-wide bus shortage and provide relief to residents.
“We are happy to be able to assist the Metropolitan Bus Authority with their shipment,” said Roberto Lugo, vice-president for Crowley’s Puerto Rico Services. “Crowley, through its transportation services, has long history of bringing good things to the people, businesses and government of Puerto Rico. The products and material we carry helps make life better for all of us living here.”
Crowley and its predecessor company have been serving the Puerto Rico market since 1954, longer than any other carrier in the trade. The company, with more than 200 Puerto Rico employees, is also the No. 1 ocean carrier between the island commonwealth and the U.S. mainland with more weekly sailings and more cargo carried annually than any other shipping line.
