Crowley Promotes Rockwell Smith to Senior Vice President and General Manager of Marine Transport Corporation

(Weehawken, N.J.; Feb. 26, 2002) – Tom Crowley Jr., Chairman, President and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation, announced today that Rockwell Smith has been promoted to senior vice president and general manager of Crowley’s Marine Transport Corporation subsidiary, which is part of Crowley’s contract services segment, effective April 1. Smith, who will assume responsibility for all of Marine Transport’s activities, will report to Crowley and remain domiciled at the company’s Weehawken, N.J., headquarters. Jeff Miller, vice president of chartering and marketing for Marine Transport will report directly to Smith.

Smith joined Crowley in San Francisco in 1981 and held various marketing and operations positions in the harbor services and barge petroleum transportation groups. In 1990, he became manager of oil transportation, Pacific division. In 1996, he became vice president of oil transportation and harbor services, and in 1997 he was assigned to head up Crowley’s new tanker division, Crowley Petroleum Transport, Inc.

In 2001, Smith relocated to New Jersey to join Marine Transport as vice president of ship management, and Crowley Petroleum Transport tankers were folded into the Marine Transport organization.

Smith graduated from Pomona College in 1977 and earned an MBA degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1986.

Marine Transport, which got its start in 1816, is the oldest shipping company in the United States. The company owns and operates a fleet totaling 42 ships for its own account and for other vessel owners. It owns and operates four chemical parcel carriers and time charters two others. It also owns seven product carriers and will be taking delivery of four new articulated tug-barge units this year. Two of its large crude oil tankers are operated by others in the Alaska trade. In addition, Marine Transport manages seven U.S. flag commercial cargo vessels and twenty government vessels in several vessel management subsidiaries.
