Crowley Employees to Help Senior Citizens During Make A Difference Day on October 23
(Jacksonville, Fla.; Oct. 18, 2004) – More than 600 Crowley Maritime Corporation employees and family members – from Kotzebue, Alaska, to the Caribbean and points in between – will be brightening the day for senior citizens on Make A Difference Day, Oct. 23.
Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others – a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA Weekend magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Last year, 3 million people cared enough about their communities to volunteer on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.
This year, Crowley employees in 23 locations have decided to provide aid and comfort primarily to senior citizens in nursing homes. Employees have adopted the slogan: Crowley Cares – From the Caribbean to Alaska.
For instance, Crowley employees and their families in Atlanta will be visiting an assisted living home and will bring snacks and play bingo with the residents. In Kotzebue, Alaska, employees and families will be holding a potluck meal for 10 residents in an assisted living facility. In Bethel, Alaska, employees will collect blankets and donate them to the elderly. In New Orleans, employees will visit with nursing home residents and run errands for them. In the San Francisco Bay Area, employees and family members will be collecting books and magazines to deliver to assisted living facilities, among other things.
In Jacksonville, some Crowley employees and family members will be donating and preparing goodie bags with toiletries and comfort items for seniors in assisted living facilities. Others will be working with the City of Jacksonville to host a seniors’ flea market, in which Crowley personnel will be hosting a breakfast, running bingo games, donating items and assisting with the actual sale. And in Seattle, Crowley employees will be preparing and serving lunch at a low-income senior center.
“This is the first year Crowley has participated in Make A Difference Day as a company, and I’m pleased that we were able to facilitate our employees’ desires to give something back to the communities in which we live,” said Tom Crowley Jr., chairman, president and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation. “I think this is a great way to show our support, honor, appreciation and respect to the elderly, who have contributed so much to our communities and who now could benefit from our assistance and companionship.”
