Crowley Donates $10,000 towards Scholarships for Students at University of Alaska Fairbanks

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska; December 22, 2011) - Crowley Maritime Corporation recently continued its commitment to education by presenting $10,000 to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The donation will fund scholarships for students in the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at UAF, and is part of a company initiative to help support the Alaskan communities where Crowley does business and its employees reside.

Crowley’s Bob Cox, vice president, petroleum distribution group, presented the funding to Mike Castellini, dean of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, earlier this month. The funds will be allocated to four students chosen by UAF for the 2011-2012 school year. The scholarships will be awarded at a special luncheon at the start of the spring semester. This is the second consecutive year Crowley has donated scholarship funds to students at UAF.

“Crowley strives to strengthen the communities in which we do business. Helping local students continue their education is one of the best ways to do that,” said Cox. “Much of the Alaskan economy is dependent upon fisheries and marine life, and as a maritime-based company, it’s important for us to support students who are seeking careers in these areas.”

Crowley created this scholarship program to help young people – primarily, but not exclusively – from the rural communities it serves achieve their dreams. Preference is given to native Alaska students and students from Anchorage, Kenai, Palmer, Wasilla, Nenana, Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Glennallen, Valdez, Fort Yukon, Galena, St. Mary’s, Iliamna, Bethel, Aniak, McGrath, Hooper Bay, St. Michael, Nome, Kotzebue and Prudhoe Bay. Crowley serves as the main petroleum distribution and sales company in these communities.

Since 1984, Crowley has provided more than half-a-million dollars in scholarship funding for more than 200 students studying at maritime academies and other select institutions in the U.S., Alaska, Puerto Rico and Central America. In 1994, Crowley Chairman, President and CEO, Tom Crowley Jr., established the Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship Program, in honor of his father, and has also donated more than $2 million over the years to support other educational programs.
