Crowley Awarded ISO 14001 Certification for its Environmental Management System

(Jacksonville, Fla.; Jan. 23, 2003) – Crowley’s ship assist and escort services group has been awarded ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system used for its operations in Valdez, Alaska. Crowley is committed to continual improvement in its environmental performance and ISO 14001 certification is the result of Valdez employees full participation in environmental management.

This certification is applicable to Crowley’s provision of ship management and operation of tugboats in ship assist and escort services as well as response barges and oil spill response vessels. Crowley provides these services in Valdez Harbor and Prince William Sound for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company Ship Escort/Response Vessel System (SERVS).

The International Organization for Standardization ISO 14001 specifies requirements for a total quality environmental management system. It enables an organization such as Crowley to have its environmental management system externally certified. The process to achieve this ISO 14001 certification involved third-party audits by American Bureau of Shipping Quality Evaluations.

“Crowley is proud of its high environmental standards and its ability to meet them year after year,” said Charlie Nalen, Crowley vice president of Environmental, Safety and Quality Assurance. “We know that protecting the environment is important to our customers, the communities we do business in and our employees.”

While keeping its goal of zero pollution, Crowley’s Valdez operations group set and achieved environmental objectives that reduced the amount of waste paper and reduced the amount of oil generated by its vessels. A process has also been implemented that allows employees to report environmental concerns or opportunities for improvement with respect to pollution prevention.

In 2000, Crowley was awarded the William Benkert Award, the Coast Guard’s premier national award recognizing excellence in marine environmental protection. This ISO 140001 certification is international recognition that environmental management is one of Crowley’s highest priorities.
