San Juan Publication El Vocero Names Crowley
(SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO October 6, 2000) The San Juan business publication El Vocero has named Roberto Lugo Jr., Crowley Liner Services Vice President, Puerto Rico, Transportation Industry Businessman of the Year for 2000. Lugo was among 30 individuals from San Juans business community recognized for contributing to the growth and development of their respective industries in Puerto Rico.
El Vocero specifically recognized Lugo for helping to improve the services Crowley offers to the Puerto Rico maritime community; introducing more effective methods of operations; achieving high quality, effective worker-employer communication and collaboration; contributing to Crowleys growth on the island; and establishing a contingency plan that allowed Crowley to offer service without interruption during Hurricane Georges in 1998.
Lugo began his career in the maritime shipping industry in 1973, and has worked for Crowley for more than 15 years. While with Crowley he spent nine and a half years organizing and managing Crowleys network of Caribbean Island feeder services. His current responsibilities include the management of nearly 400 people, 200,000 annual trailer and vehicle moves and approximately 250 vessel calls a year.
He received the Thomas Crowley Trophy, Crowley Maritimes highest honor, in 1997.
