K Storm Update

It is with regret that Crowley must inform you of continued schedule delays for our vessel K-Storm, which makes regular port calls between Port Everglades, Fla.; Port of Mariel, Cuba; and Central America. For several days, the K-Storm has been stationed at the Port of Mariel, Cuba, which was closed on Sunday due to unsafe weather conditions.

The latest information provided to us is that the port was reopened late this morning. The K-Storm has been given priority to enter the port first, despite the fact that three other vessels are also waiting. Crowley’s plan is to unload cargo expeditiously and depart Cuba for Central America at 4:00 p.m. (EST) today. Customers will receive an updated sailing schedule from Crowley as soon as it is available later today.

In an effort to provide transparency, we also wish to share with you the limited choices we were given upon learning that the Port of Mariel was closed earlier this week. Our first option was to remain stationed in Cuba and await the reopening of the port. The second was to return to the U.S. before calling upon Central America, as regulations prevented us from bypassing the closed Port of Mariel. Given these choices, we made the careful decision to await the port’s reopening in an attempt to further reduce schedule delays. While we cannot control the weather conditions, know that we have been doing everything possible to expedite the process, including working closely with the authorities and Port of Mariel, scheduling a replacement ship for the next U.S.-Central America sailing, and requesting a waiver that would allow us to bypass Cuba in the future should a similar situation present.

Crowley wants you to know that we share your frustration in these delays and we sincerely apologize for the inconveniences they are surely causing. It is never our desire to disappoint customers, and we hope that during our 14 loyal years of serving the U.S.-to-Cuba trade, and more than 50 years serving Central America, you recognize how heartfelt this sentiment is.
