NIGERIA: FLOATING PRODUCTION PLATFORM - CHEVRON
Between 1997 and 1998, Crowley provided submersible transportation of several
concrete floating production platforms from the US Gulf to offshore Nigeria.
Crowley won this contract based on the detailed proposal submitted which included
all aspects of the submersion processes for the transport barge, design and
fabrication of sea fastenings and discharge operations as well as the coordination
of all support craft and inland movements. This operation, as do many of Crowleys
projects of this nature, required detailed analysis of the stability and structural
integrity of both the cargo and the transportation unit to ensure a safe and efficient
operation. Importation into Nigeria also requires detailed co-ordination between all
parties involved due to the nature of the legal and political system. Because of the
sensitivity of the project, Crowley was able to arrive in Nigeria, remove sea fastenings,
shift the concrete barges to site and depart Nigerian waters within 48 hours of initial
arrival: a record for submersible transport to Nigeria which still stands.
The platforms were transported to the Benin River, discharged, and moved up river
to a nearby, smaller river to the job site.
