Puerto Rico Strike Update
To Our Valued Customers,
The massive strike of government workers and many labor organizations in Puerto Rico is the result of more than 17,000 layoffs by the government. Organizers of the strike are announcing they will start protests/marches at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2009, from 7 strategic points around the city and congregate at Plaza las Americas.
Major traffic jams are expected, but the Police Department is planning to keep the port areas unobstructed. However, the strike still might affect the ability of truckers to reach or enter our terminal. Although our union (Teamsters) does not endorse this strike, they will not cross any strike lines.
In preparation for the general strike that has been announced to take place Thursday, October 15, 2009, our Isla Grande Terminal asks that cargo for Pennsauken, NJ and the Virgin Islands be delivered by Wednesday, October 14th, to avoid any problems. The Terminal will remain open on Thursday, October 15th, working only one vessel, El Conquistador, V41. The La Reina, V100, will be pushed to Friday, October 16th and work alongside the Jacksonville, V101. Operations should be back to normal on Friday.
