Super Carrier Initiative Agreement
Introduced to the industry back in the 1980s, the Carrier
Initiative Program (CIP) was the first industry-government
partnership program designed to protect the U.S. from the smuggling
of narcotics, stowaways and other contraband. Crowley is an original
member and lead participant in the Super Carrier Initiative
Agreement (SCIA) with U.S. Customs. This program requires compliance
in security standards that represent the "Highest Degree of Due
Diligence" specified by Customs.
Over 3,800 carriers are now involved with the general Carrier
Initiative Program (CIP), voluntarily agreeing to secure their
facilities and vessels standard security procedures, while U.S.
Customs conducts site surveys and provides appropriate training and
recommendations for improving security. However, only Crowley and 10
other ocean carriers are members of the Super Carrier Initiative
Agreement, which means we follow the highest standards established
by Customs. And this higher priority is just the first step Crowley
takes to protect your cargo.
