Employees in Costa Rica Help Improve School Conditions

Crowley personnel in Costa Rica have been working to repair the facilities of a small school in Sarapiqui, located in the northern zone of Costa Rica. The one room school has 20 students in first through sixth grade and only one teacher. The school which has not received any financial assistance, was in very bad condition. The Crowley employees thought it was a good opportunity to undertake a charitable project and discussed the idea with Rodrigo Hernandez, director and teacher of the school. Hernandez also called on the fathers of the students to help the Crowley volunteers with the repairs one Saturday. During the first phase of their visit, a cement base was built around the perimeter of the school to protect the building’s foundation from flooding during the rainy season. The walls were also improved and the volunteers will next be working on the roof and floor. In the near future, they will paint the whole building. In addition, the employees are planning to supply the school with desks and tables. A former Crowley employee, who now owns a printing company, was contacted and agreed to provide books for the school as well.
