Roberts rejoined Crowley in September of 2008 as senior vice president and general counsel. From 1991 to 2000, he served the company as a corporate attorney and as vice president of government relations.

He has spent the last eight years in private practice in Washington, DC, most recently as a partner with Venable LLP, one of The American Lawyer's top 100 law firms. While there, he represented Crowley and a number of other clients involved in international trade and transportation.

Roberts has worked on key legislative initiatives (e.g., Maritime Security Act of 1996, Coast Guard Authorization Act, and Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998), managed Crowley’s political action committee and consulted on government contract matters. In recent years, he helped Crowley obtain the first licenses for commercial shipping services between the United States and Cuba, worked with a coalition of American maritime interests in a successful legislative effort to close a loophole in U.S. cabotage laws and assisted with a variety of issues within the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security.

Roberts also taught business law as an Adjunct Professor at American University, Washington College of Law. He is a life member of the National Defense Transportation Association; a member of the Propeller Club of the United States (D.C. Board of Governors, 1994-2003); a member of the Maritime Administrative Bar Association (President 1999-2000); a member of Coastwise Coalition (founding Chairman); and a member of the Navy League of the United States.

Roberts has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University and a Juris Doctor degree from American University, Washington College of Law.
