Truckload Intermodal Cost Indexes for the 2nd Quarter of 2017

For the second quarter 2017, the CASS Index, which is being used to monitor and evaluate U.S. Inland rates, reflected an average of 123.4 for Truckload and 128.6 for Intermodal (rail). Compared to the established baseline of 125.2 for Truckload and 133.6 for Intermodal (rail), the Truckload Index decreased by -1.44% and the Intermodal (rail) decreased by -3.74%. Therefore, effective September 1st, 2017, we will be decreasing our tariff and contract Intermodal (rail) rates by 3.74%. The Truckload rates will not change since the second quarter average against the baseline was less than +/- 2%. The indexes can be found here: CASS Indexes .

For the third quarter 2017 review, the baseline index for the Intermodal (rail) will adjust to 128.6 and the Truckload will remain the same at 125.2. The next review period is set for October 2017. You can view the requirements and Index history here .

Additionally, for the second quarter 2017, the Department of Energy’s retail on-highway diesel prices all types index 3-month average, which is being used to determine the Intermodal Fuel Charge, was $2.551.  Therefore, effective September 1st, 2017, the Intermodal Fuel Charge Percentage will be reduced to 17.5%.  You can view the requirements and index history here .
