Inland Cost Monitoring – Nov 2017

11/28/2017

The U.S. trucking industry continues to see an overall demand for services that exceeds available truck power in the market. For October 2017, the CASS Index which we use to monitor inland costs for our customers on a monthly basis, posted 132.5 for Truckload and 132.8 for Intermodal (rail). This is an increase of 5.8% over the established baseline of 125.2 for Truckload and a 3.3% increase over the established baseline of 128.6 for Intermodal (rail).

Therefore, we will be increasing our tariff and contract Truckload rates by 5.8% and our tariff and contract Intermodal (rail) rates by 3.3% effective January 1, 2018.

For the November 2017 review, the baseline indexes will be 132.5 for Truckload and 132.8 for Intermodal (rail). The next review is set for December 2017, after which an appropriate adjustment will be made if necessary. The requirements and Index history can be viewed here .

To better reflect these fluid market dynamics, we will also move from quarterly to monthly adjustments of the Intermodal Fuel Charge. The Department of Energy’s retail, on-highway diesel price index average for October, which is being used to determine the Intermodal Fuel Charge, was $2.794. Therefore, also effective January 1, 2018, the Intermodal Fuel Percentage will be increased to 20.5%. The requirements and index history for these charges can be viewed here . The next review of this index is set for December 2017.
