FAQs for Revised SOLAS Container Weight Regulations

2016-01-04

Happy New Year. As you begin to execute your business plan in 2016, please remember to prepare for the implementation of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention amendments that will take effect globally on July 1, 2016. Seven months from now, these amendments will require packed shipping containers to have a verified gross mass before they can be loaded on a ship for export. A simplified summary of these requirements in an infographic (courtesy of JOC.com) can be found here.

Acknowledging the significant impact these regulations will have on operational practices, an industry coalition consisting of the World Shipping Council, TT Club, ICHCA International, and Global Shippers Forum, have developed a document with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to assist stakeholders in preparing for the SOLAS amendments implementation. We encourage you to review these FAQs to help provide more clarity on the amendments and what is required for you to successfully implement the new weight regulations. You may access these FAQs by clicking here.

We will continue to keep you updated to help ensure you are ready for the amendment implementation on July 1.

We thank you for your continued support and wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year.
