Crowley has partnered with the San Juan Bay Estuary Board and schools and communities in the area around the San Juan Bay Estuary in Puerto Rico to form an environmental program called "Vigilantes del Estuario" (or Watchmen of the Estuary).
To protect and preserve this important body of water officials must first understand the health of the estuary and be able to monitor efforts to clean it up. As such, Crowley has purchased and distributed sophisticated water testing kits to several of the schools in the area so that students can regularly monitor and report on the quality of the water in various parts of the estuary. The kits measure indexes such as dissolved oxygen, pH and nutrients and many other factors. After their first semester of research, the "Vigilantes" prepared reports of their findings and presented them to Carl Soderberg, director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Caribbean Division. The program continues today.
